Recently, the Illinois State Board of Education passed what is being termed the "Junk Food Ban". This amendment incorporates nutritional requirements for food that is served OUTSIDE of the typical meal periods and outside the foodservice area. This amendment only pertains to Kindergarten - 8th grades. It was passed in an effort to combat childhood obesity.
It requires food in vending machines, food for fundraisers and food used as rewards or recognition to meet certain criteria. Although the regulation does not pertain to our high schools, we have been very proactive with our Wellness Policy to minimize certain food items and increase healthier choices.
