Whole Grain Goodness

Grains are an essential part of a healthy diet. Whole grain products use the entire grain seed of wheat, rye, rice, barley, corn or oats, without milling out or altering the components. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend getting at least half your grains as whole grains – or three one-ounce equivalents each day.

 What is a Whole Grain?

A “whole grain” is the complete grain, including the bran, germ and endosperm.

·       Bran. The coarse outer layer of the grain that protects the seed. It contains fiber, B vitamins and trace minerals.

·       Germ. The small, nutrient-rich core of the grain kernel. It contains antioxidants, vitamin E, B vitamins and healthy fats.

·       Endosperm. The middle layer of the grain that contains carbohydrates and proteins. This is the source of energy for the growing plant.

 Whole Grain Nutrition Benefits

Eating whole grain as part of a healthy diet may help:

·       Protect heart health. Diets rich in whole grain foods can reduce the risk of heart disease.

·       Reduce cancer risk. Diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods and that are low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of some cancers.

·       Promote digestive regularity. Fiber from whole grain promotes regularity and keeps the intestines working smoothly to help maintain good digestive health.

·       Manage weight. People who include more whole grain in their diet tend to have healthier body weights and gain less weight over time than those who do not.

Essential Nutrients Contained in Whole Grain

·       Carbohydrates. The brain, heart and nervous system require a constant supply of carbohydrates.

·       B vitamins. These vitamins help bodies use energy from food and support good nutrition.

·       Fiber. Fiber is important for normal digestive regularity and can help with weight management.

·       Antioxidants. These vitamins and other substances help protect cells from damage.

·       Magnesium. Magnesium is essential for building bone and using stored energy.
