Nutrition Wellness Policy
All school districts operating a National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or USDA school food authority program must be compliant with the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act of 2004 requirement of instituting a Local School Wellness Policy (LSWP). School districts must develop specific policies which address nutrition education, physical education, and nutrition standards for all foods that are available on each school campus during the school day.
Below are the 5 primary components of a policy:
- Goals for nutrition education, physical activity and other school-based activities.
- Nutrition guidelines for all foods on school campus during the school day. Guidelines should promote student health and reduce childhood obesity.
- Provide assurance that guidelines for reimbursable school meals meet or exceed NSLP standards as set forth by USDA.
- Establish a plan to measure implementation and ensure LSWP adherence.
- Community involvement: parents, students, representative of the school food authority, the school board, school administrators and the public development of the LSWP.
