Gluten Free Dining Options

Starting in Spring '11, Harcombe Dining Hall will be featuring a new "Gluten Free Zone" where
those students, staff and faculty will be able to choose from several gluten free options.
The "Gluten Free Zone" will be located at the end of the Nature's Marketplace station,
across from the salad bar.

Options include gluten free pasta on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, gluten free pizza on
Tuesday and Thursday, and gluten free sandwiches on the weekend.

Food Allergies

You would contact either the Nutritionist (Jon Unsworth) at
nutrition@clemson.edu or a Food Service Director (click on the tab "Contact Us") and let us know about your condition.  If you do have a documented food allergy, we at Clemson Dining Services appreciate the disclosure of your condition, as this will help us to better serve your needs.  Include in the email what type of food allergy it is and we will contact you for further details.

The following steps have been taken to help accomodate those that have food allergies:

  • Foods that contain nuts are clearly labeled.
  • We do not purchase or utilize any nut oils in our dining facilities.
  • The elimination of cross contamination hazards is emphasized at daily line checks and pre-service meetings.
  • Minimized the use of foods that contain common allergens, i.e., we do not use nuts in our main entrees.
  • Soymilk, for those that have a milk allergy or are lactose intolerant, is provided at each dining hall.  The on-counter cooler is located near a beverage station and is clearly labeled.
  • As a side note - For those who have a lactose intolerance, keep in mind that the shredded cheddar cheese (good source of calcium) at every salad bar has 1 gram or less lactose per ounce (1 serving).  In contrast, milk has 12 grams of lactose per 8 fl. oz (1 serving).

As a reminder, make sure to double check with a manager about the potential of cross contamination of any food in question.

Vegetarian and Vegan Choices

There are vegetarian and vegan menu options everyday at each dining hall, with dedicated vegetarian/vegan stations at Harcombe (Nature's Marketplace) and Schilletter (Veg Out).

Recent examples from all three dining halls include: Vegan Chili Rellenos, Blackened Tofu Salad, Make Your Own Veggie Stir-Fry, Stuffed Acorn Squash and  Vegan Chili.
